What is shibari and why is the rope essential?

Theshibari is aart ancestral art ofJapanese bondage where therope plays a central role: it extends the gesture, creates connection and draws aesthetic lines on theskin.

Shibari: a Japanese bondage art rooted in BDSM

Rooted in the tradition ofkinbaku, theshibari goes beyond mererestraint physical to become apractice sensory and emotional. Itsorigins trace back tofeudal Japan wherehojojutsu was amartial art used to immobiliseprisoners. Today, thisart blends aesthetics, eroticism and deep connection at the heart ofBDSM.

The central role of the rope in shibari practice

Therope is not a mereaccessory : itsmaterial, its texture and itsflexibility directly influence thesensations, thesafety and thevisual appearance of yoursessions. Arope ofquality ensures comfort on theskin, strength insuspension, and durability.

How to choose your shibari rope: materials and characteristics

Jute, hemp, cotton or synthetic: eachmaterial offerscharacteristics different. Here iseverything to make the rightchoice according to yourpractice.

The jute rope: the traditional reference

Thejute rope is thetraditional of theJapanese shibari. Lightweight, supple and offering excellent knot hold, it is thereference worldwidethanks to itsvalue for money unbeatable and its performance from floor tosuspensions. Thejute requiresmaintenance regular (singeing, waxing every 2–3 months for regular use or every 3–5sessions for occasional use, oiling) but offers a lifespan of 2–3 years.

The alternatives: hemp, cotton, linen and synthetic materials

Thehemp offers natural robustness and longevity, ideal forsuspensions demanding.cotton is soft and hypoallergenic but slips more (not recommended forsuspensions). Thelinen offers an interesting balance between flexibility andstrength. Avoid synthetic ropes (nylon, polyester, polypropylene): they heat up through friction and create serious burn risks during rapid orsuspensions.

What length, diameter and twist should you choose?

The dimensions of your shibari rope determine its manoeuvrability, versatility and resistance. Understanding these technical criteria will help you make the right choice.

6mm diameter: the international standard

The6mm diameter is the international standard forshibari : the perfect balance between comfort on theskin, strength forsuspension (200–300kg resistance), and manoeuvrability in executing figures. Alternative5mm (more discreet, photogenic) or8mm (more visually imposing, for beginners).

Rope length: adapting your ropes to your practice

Standard length: 8 metres (versatile for chest, arm and leg harnesses).Short length: 4–6 metres (simple wrist/ankle restraints).Long length: 10–12 metres (complex figures, suspensions partial/complete). Calculate your needs according to yourlevel and your favourite figures.

Rope construction: 1 ply vs 3 ply

1 ply rope (single-ply): flexibility and learning

The1 ply rope (single-ply, a single twisted strand) offers maximum flexibility and smooth glide. Ideal for beginners andbondage on the floor, it makes learning knots and handling easier. Please note : less resistant, it is not suitablestep to thesuspensions.

3 ply rope (three twisted strands): strength and suspension

The3 ply rope (three twisted strands together) offersstrength superior and proven resistance.Essential for any suspension (partial or complete), it guaranteessafety maximum and increased durability. More rigid at first, it softens withmaintenance and use.

Shibari rope for beginners or experienced practitioners: our advice

Whether you are discoveringshibari or as you refine your technique inJapanese bondage, thechoice of yourropes must adapt to yourlevel and your type ofpractice.

Starting shibari: how many ropes to buy and which ones?

To begin at home, arope short5m in cotton is enough to familiarise yourself withknots ofbasic and the firstholds. If you wish totrain more seriously inshibari, add arope injute of8m or10m : it offers a better balance betweencomfort on theskin, knot holdknots and durability to tackle intermediate figures (arm/wrist restraints, simple chest harness, leg ties).Add EMT-type safety scissors to yourkit and browse ourpractical guides to progress with completesafety.

Floor practice or suspension: adapting your equipment

Theshibari on the floor allowsropes finer (5mm) andmaterials softer according to your sensory preferences. However, suspension demandsjute ropes or6mm hemp (3 ply construction exclusively), tested for a minimum resistance of 200–300kg. Never attemptsuspension without prior training and the accompaniment of anpractitioner experienced practitioner.

Caring for and preparing your shibari ropes

A well-maintained rope lasts longer, remains pleasant to the touch and ensures your safety with every use. Here are the essential steps.

Singeing: removing stray fibres

For a jute or hemp rope, gently pass a flame over yourrope new rope to remove the "fuzzies" (stray fibres). This step improves comfort on theskin and thevisual visual appearance. Then brush with a soft brush.

Waxing: protecting and softening

Apply beeswax or specialist wax every 2–3 months (regular use) or every 3–5sessions (occasional use) on a jute or hemp rope. Waxing protects the fibres, softens therope and improves its durability. Rub in, heat (hair dryer), leave to dry for 24 hours.

Oiling: nourishing natural fibres

Oil yourropes with jojoba or coconut oil (avoid mineral oils). This step nourishes the natural fibres, preserves their suppleness, and extends their lifespan to 2–3 years withmaintenance appropriate.

Safety in shibari: practising Japanese bondage with confidence

The main risks and how to avoid them

Nerve compression (tingling, numbness = release immediately; avoid the inner arm, back of the knee, sides of the neck).Circulatory issues (skin bluish tinge, coldness = stop immediately; limit to 5–10 minutes insuspension). Falls during suspension (anchor point tested to a minimum of 300kg or at least 4 times body weight;3 ply ropes exclusively;professional equipment).

The golden rules of safety

  • Communication: clear safe word (red/orange/green system)
  • Training : learn withreliable guides andrecognised masters
  • Equipment : ropes ofprofessional quality, jute orhemp exclusively forsuspension
  • Scissors : always keepsafety (EMT type) within reach
  • Sobriety : never practise under the influence
  • Gradual progression : progress gradually frombondage on the floor before attemptingsuspension. Never suspend without prior training and the accompaniment of an experiencedpractitioner experienced practitioner.
